DANTES provides upfront funding of CLEP & DSST test fees, for the first attempt on all exam titles, for eligible military members. Military members who retest should use the civilian test registration procedures to pay for test costs, as DANTES does not pay for retesting.

The Details
If you or your spouse fit this criteria, you can take your first attempt at passing a DSST or CLEP course for free. This means that your first time taking an exam is free. If you do not pass your exam, you can take the exam again, but it will not be funded — you’ll have to pay out of pocket.
No Exam Fee
If you test at an off-base, non-fully funded test center, your exam fee will be covered. You might be subject to paying on your own for any administration fees.
No Exam or Administration Fee
If you’re testing at an on-base or off-base, fully funded test center, your exam and administration fees will be paid for.

Information for Veterans, Dependents, and Spouses
There are a number of people who might not qualify for the free funding that active-duty military members receive.
Those who cannot receive DANTES-based funding include:
- Veterans
- Children or other dependents of active duty military
- Spouses or Air and Army National Guard, as well as Air Force and Army Reserves
- Spouses of Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, Marine Corps Reserve, Navy, and Navy Reserve active duty military members
- Department of Defense Acquisition Workforce personnel
- Coast Guard inactive Guard, or Reserve
Even though you might not qualify for funding for your first test, fear not!
